Ukrzaliznytsia, Ukraine’s national railway company, plans to introduce double-decker passenger trains starting in 2026, the Ministry of Finance has announced.
According to Deputy Finance Minister Oleksandr Kava, the new double-decker coaches will help optimize passenger transport costs while significantly increasing capacity.
“The maintenance costs of double-decker and standard cars differ by only about 10%, while the passenger capacity of double-decker coaches is nearly 80% higher,” Kava explained.
The railway operator intends to purchase both overnight sleeper cars and daytime seated coaches, allowing for greater flexibility across Ukraine’s expanding network of long-distance and intercity routes.
The move is part of Ukrzaliznytsia’s broader strategy to modernize its rolling stock and enhance the comfort and efficiency of train travel as passenger demand continues to grow.
