Plans to expand Lviv Danylo Halytskyi International Airport have moved forward after a memorandum was signed by the airport authorities and the Sokilnytska Territorial Community, outlining the next phases of infrastructure development.
The agreement focuses on pre-project decisions that will shape the future development of the airport, including the potential construction of a new passenger terminal and expanded cargo facilities.
According to Yuriy Buchko, deputy head of the Lviv Oblast Military Administration, the airport will first develop its own expansion concept, which will then be coordinated with the local community. Once approved, the territorial community will amend its master plan to redesignate nearby land currently classified for agricultural use into transport infrastructure.
Officials say expansion toward the city of Lviv is not feasible due to physical constraints, leaving the Sokilnyky direction as the only viable area for growth.
The memorandum also outlines cooperation on planned restrictions, the development of a cargo terminal and the potential creation of commercial spaces linked to logistics operations.
Tatiana Romanovska, representing the airport, said the agreement establishes a clear framework for collaboration and ensures that all stages of development are aligned between stakeholders.
The initiative forms part of broader efforts to prepare Ukraine’s aviation infrastructure for future recovery and growth, with authorities emphasising the need to balance regional development with the interests of local residents.
Further consultations and planning sessions are expected, focusing on construction phases, land use transparency and the long-term expansion of both passenger and cargo capacity at the airport.
