Russian Strike Damages Historic CityHotel Residence Building in Kyiv

A historic building housing the CityHotel Residence hotel was damaged during Russia’s overnight missile and drone attack on Kyiv on July 2, adding another architectural landmark to the list of cultural sites affected by the war.

Located on Taras Shevchenko Boulevard in central Kyiv, the early 20th-century building suffered damage after the large-scale attack, which sparked fires and caused destruction across several districts of the Ukrainian capital.

Architectural Landmark Dating to 1901

The building was completed in 1901 and designed by prominent Kyiv architect Yosyp Zektser. It was commissioned by Kyiv lawyer Hryhorii Bohrov and became one of the architect’s earliest major projects.

Over more than a century, the property has primarily operated as a hotel. During the Soviet period, it was known as the Leningrad Hotel before later being renamed the St Petersburg Hotel. Following an extensive restoration in recent years, the historic building reopened as CityHotel Residence, combining preserved architectural features with modern hospitality facilities.

Connection to Russian Imperial History

The building is also linked to a notable episode in Russian imperial history. Ten years after its completion, Hryhorii Bohrov’s son, Dmytro Bohrov, assassinated Russian Prime Minister Pyotr Stolypin during a performance at the Kyiv Opera House in 1911.

That event became one of the defining political assassinations of the late Russian Empire and cemented the Bohrov family’s place in history.

Damage During Large-Scale Attack

The damage occurred during one of the largest Russian aerial attacks on Kyiv this year. Emergency services responded to fires and destruction across multiple districts, while debris from intercepted missiles and drones damaged residential buildings, businesses and historic structures, including the CityHotel Residence building.

Although the landmark sustained damage, the full extent of the structural impact has not yet been disclosed. The incident highlights the continuing threat facing Ukraine’s historic architecture as Russian strikes increasingly affect cultural heritage sites alongside civilian infrastructure.
