Kyiv–Chișinău–Bucharest Train Resumes in Test Mode — First Cross-Border Journey Since the War Began

For the first time since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the Kyiv–Chișinău–Bucharest train route is being reactivated in test mode, according to Moldova Liberă. The move marks a significant step in restoring direct rail connectivity between Ukraine, Moldova, and Romania.

The first test train departs from Kyiv on the night of August 7–8 and is scheduled to arrive in Bucharest on the night of August 8–9. The return journey from Bucharest is set to depart the following night.

No Tickets Yet — This Is a Test Run

Tickets are not available to the public for this initial run, as it is strictly a test operation to assess the technical and logistical readiness of the route. According to early plans, two Ukrainian railcars will be attached to the existing Chișinău–Bucharest train and will continue the journey to Romania’s capital.

In the future, the service is expected to expand to four Ukrainian railcars, creating a more robust connection. Journalists note that this is the first launch of this route since the war began in February 2022.

A Symbol of Regional Cooperation and Recovery

The renewed service carries both practical and symbolic weight. It reflects growing cooperation between Ukraine, Moldova, and Romania, and enhances safe, ground-based mobility between Ukraine and the EU — especially important amid ongoing airspace restrictions and limited aviation access.

What’s Next?

Following the test run, authorities will evaluate its success before launching regular passenger services and opening ticket sales. Official schedules and pricing will be announced after final coordination between the national railway operators of Ukraine, Moldova, and Romania.

The Kyiv–Chișinău–Bucharest train may soon become a key overland corridor linking Ukraine with the European Union — not just restoring travel options, but symbolizing hope, resilience, and the deepening of regional ties.
