Several European countries are discussing the possibility of creating so-called “no-fly” zones over western Ukraine in a bid to gradually restore commercial air travel, according to a report by The Telegraph.
Sources told the outlet the plan envisions a phased approach:
The first stage could establish a safe zone over western Ukraine, allowing the reopening of Lviv Airport and possibly other regional airports.
In the future, and contingent on a potential ceasefire agreement, the measures could be extended to Kyiv and other central regions.
To ensure flight safety, the proposal could involve Western fighter jets and ground-based air defense systems, The Telegraph reported.
European partners view the resumption of air travel as a key factor in attracting investment to Ukraine and supporting the return of refugees.
However, the report stresses this is not an official plan, only discussions revealed by British journalists. Any decision to restart flights will depend on the security situation on the ground and political agreements.
