Dnipro’s craft brewery MOVA has released The History of Brewing in Dnipro, a detailed study dedicated to the region’s beer-making heritage. The publication explores brewing not just as a culinary craft but as an integral part of Ukrainian cultural identity.
According to the authors, the main goal of the book is to show that brewing in Ukraine is not a borrowed tradition but a deeply rooted part of local history. Among the highlights is a recipe for an old Cossack beer soup made with croutons, onions, and butter, reflecting the rustic and hearty tastes of the steppe. The book even includes historical pricing: in the early 20th century, a mug of beer cost between seven and sixteen kopecks, equivalent today to roughly 100–130 hryvnias.
Through its pages, the book traces the story of Dnipro as seen through the evolution of beer making, from the era of the Zaporizhian Sich to the modern craft scene. A special chapter focuses on the pre-revolutionary breweries of Katerynoslav, including the Bothe Brewery, founded in 1873–1874, which operated on the same site for over a century. Its original building still stands at the corner of Dmytro Yavornytskyi Avenue and Stepan Bandera Street.
The publication also examines the Soviet period and the rebirth of craft brewing in independent Ukraine, connecting local traditions with contemporary techniques. The project brought together a team of 12 experts, including MOVA brewery staff, historians, brewers, and cultural researchers.
The first print run includes 500 copies, each offering readers a look at how beer became more than a beverage in Dnipro — it became a reflection of the city’s spirit and history.
