In 2024, Bukovel launched a large-scale transformation aimed at creating a certified tourism cluster that meets international sustainability standards. The resort aspires to become the fifth in the world and the first non-state tourism destination in Ukraine to receive certification under global protocols.
The certification process involves a comprehensive assessment and audit based on 84 indicators. These include destination management approaches, implementation of social responsibility principles, inclusive practices, conservation of ecological resources, protection of natural capital, and safeguarding the social and cultural values of local communities. The evaluation also addresses water resource management, waste handling, air quality monitoring, and the regulation of light and noise pollution.
Bukovel has already installed air quality monitoring sensors, implemented standards for water resource management, introduced waste sorting practices, and is conducting studies on the impact of tourism on the environment, culture, and local communities.
As part of its transformation, Bukovel is aligning with the EU Green Deal and the Glasgow Declaration, both aimed at combating climate change. By 2025, the resort plans to certify 30% of its hotels under the Green Key and Green Globe international standards.
The changes underway at Bukovel showcase Ukraine’s readiness to integrate into the global tourism space by embracing sustainability principles. This transformation is a significant step in positioning Bukovel as a model for sustainable tourism development in the region.
