Russian Attacks and Severe Weather Delay Dozens of Trains Across Ukraine

At least 42 trains operated by Ukraine’s state railway company Ukrzaliznytsia have been delayed following a combination of mass Russian attacks and severe winter weather, the operator said on Friday.

According to the railway company, the primary cause of the disruptions is heavy icing on the overhead contact network, which supplies power to electric trains. As a result, 18 long-distance passenger services and 24 suburban trains are running behind schedule.

Some of the most significant delays are affecting key intercity routes, including services passing through western Ukraine and the city of Lviv. The longest delays reported include:

Train No. 79/80 Lviv – Dnipro: delayed by 7 hours 36 minutes

Train No. 113/134 Kyiv – Kamianets-Podilskyi: delayed by 7 hours 10 minutes

Train No. 63/64 Przemyśl – Kharkiv: delayed by 5 hours 41 minutes

Train No. 111/112 Lviv – Izium: delayed by 5 hours 41 minutes

Train No. 5/6 Zaporizhzhia – Yasynia: delayed by 6 hours 9 minutes

Train No. 45/46 Kharkiv – Uzhhorod: delayed by 3 hours 44 minutes

Train No. 61/62 Dnipro – Ivano-Frankivsk: delayed by 6 hours 53 minutes

Train No. 41/42 Dnipro – Truskavets: delayed by 5 hours 41 minutes

Ukrzaliznytsia also said that the delayed arrival of a turnaround train from Kyiv has affected departures elsewhere. As a result, Train No. 766 from Odesa is expected to depart approximately two and a half hours later than scheduled.

Railway officials said crews are working to de-ice the contact network and restore normal operations as quickly as possible. The disruptions come amid continued Russian strikes on Ukraine’s infrastructure and worsening winter conditions, which together are placing additional strain on the country’s transport system.
