Krakow Unveils Detailed Plans for Its First Metro System

Krakow, one of Poland’s most visited and historically rich cities, has taken a major step toward transforming urban transport. In September 2025, the city unveiled detailed plans for its first metro system – a long-awaited project that would make Krakow only the second Polish city after Warsaw to have an underground network.

The proposed system will include two lines spanning up to 29 kilometers of underground track and 29 stations, connecting key districts across the city. Trains are expected to run every two minutes in the city center and every four minutes in outer areas, offering a faster, more efficient alternative to existing transport routes. Construction is scheduled to begin around 2030, with the project’s estimated cost reaching 3.5 billion euros.

Additional stops will include Ludwinów, Dębniki, Podgórze, and Kazimierz – connecting historic neighborhoods with emerging residential and business areas.

Beyond the city center, the route will split into two branches: Line M1 heading toward Opatkowice and Line M2 extending to Kurdwanów, each with several terminal stations.

City officials say the metro will dramatically reduce travel times and ease congestion, calling it the most important infrastructure project of the next decade. Preparatory work begins this year, including expert studies and feasibility assessments. Technical documentation and env
