4 Destinations for Winter Holidays in Ukraine

Winter holidays in Ukraine, without exaggeration, are a magical period: some have time to relax in bed with family, while others set out to explore Ukraine to discover its culture and beauty. We prepared a mini-list of places worth visiting this winter.

4 Interesting Destinations for Winter Holidays in Ukraine

Kryvorivnia

Every December, Instagram is filled with colorful photos from the celebration of the Ukrainian Kolyada. Bright Hutsul costumes, ancient carols, and age-old traditions – all of this is about the highland village of Kryvorivnia. It’s a lazy option for those who want to spend winter holidays with benefits but don’t enjoy long journeys.

Museum of Pyrohiv

If you still don’t know what a “skansen” is, it’s time to remember – it’s an open-air museum. The largest one in Europe is the National Museum of Folk Architecture and Life of Ukraine, also known as the Museum of Pyrohiv. There, unique collections of products and structures from different regions of Ukraine are gathered, including a forge, houses, cellars, windmills, water mills, and other artifacts from our ancestors.

Kopachiv

If you want to dive deeper into history and especially captivate children with it, head to the “Kyivan Rus Park” in the village of Kopachiv. Medieval city streets, princely chambers, a shipbuilding museum, and museum staff dressed in historical costumes await you. Everyone will find entertainment for themselves: from throwing axes to sleigh rides pulled by horses.

Opishnia

Opishnia

Ukrainian pottery craft is another theme worth exploring this winter. Start with the Opishnia ceramics in the settlement of Opishnia. It used to be a major center for ceramic production, including the “Artistic Ceramics” factory. Today, it houses the National Museum-Reserve of Ukrainian Pottery, where you can take a closer look at unique exhibits and learn more about local pottery families, for example, at the museum-estate of the Poshivailo family, showcasing the works of three generations of masters.
