In a shift that reflects both urgency and transformation, State Agency for Tourism Development of Ukraine has unveiled a nationwide initiative designed to change how people travel within the country.
The programme, titled “Journey to Yourself. Paths of Recovery”, proposes a new philosophy of domestic tourism – one where travel becomes a tool for emotional reset, connection with nature and rediscovery of personal identity.
Developed with the support of Ministry for Communities and Territories Development of Ukraine and in collaboration with Brand Ukraine, the initiative places wellbeing at the centre of the travel experience.
A response to exhaustion and a search for meaning
The concept emerges from a broader global context. Drawing on practices from countries such as Japan and Finland, where stress reduction is closely linked to mindfulness and nature immersion, the programme adapts these ideas to the Ukrainian landscape.
It is open to all citizens experiencing fatigue, but with a clear focus on supporting military personnel, veterans and their families. Central to the initiative is the creation of a more inclusive and barrier-free culture of hospitality, designed to meet the needs of those most affected by prolonged stress.
Travel designed around personal needs
At the core of the programme is a digital platform that transforms how trips are planned. Instead of browsing destinations, users define their intentions – whether rest, reflection or reconnection.
Based on goals, duration and budget, the system generates personalised itineraries. These can range from a two-week immersive journey to a short, two-hour experience such as visiting a pottery workshop or spending time on a rural farm.
The approach shifts the focus from destinations to outcomes, aligning travel with individual wellbeing.
Building a certified network of meaningful places
The initiative also introduces a curated network of locations across Ukraine. Nature reserves, eco-estates, retreat centres and museums are being selected based on strict criteria aligned with the programme’s values.
This certification process ensures that each location contributes to a cohesive experience centred on restoration and authenticity. Businesses across the country are currently being invited to apply and become part of the network.
Training, grants and a new tourism ecosystem
To support this transformation, participating businesses will have access to training programmes focused on sustainable tourism and communication with vulnerable groups.
A microgrant scheme is also planned, aimed at improving accessibility and integrating recovery-oriented practices into local tourism offerings.
The programme is supported by socially responsible businesses, including Zenyk Art Gallery, GORO Mountain Resort and Play Mountain Resort, highlighting a growing alignment between private investment and social impact.
