Authorities in Uzhhorod have announced the launch of a new bus route designed to streamline cross-border travel into the European Union, offering a more seamless connection between rail and road transport.
The new route No.19 will link the city’s railway station directly with the Uzhhorod – Vyšné Nemecké border crossing, one of the key entry points into Slovakia.
Timed connections with trains from Kyiv
A central feature of the new route is its synchronization with the timetable of Ukrzaliznytsia.
Bus departures will be aligned with the arrival of major trains from Kyiv, allowing passengers to transfer quickly from long-distance rail services to local transport heading toward the EU border.
The service is expected to run daily from 06:50 to 22:20, passing through central Uzhhorod and covering the city’s main transport corridors.
Cross-border coordination with Slovakia
The initiative is being complemented by parallel measures on the Slovak side.
From July 1, 2026, regional authorities in eastern Slovakia plan to introduce regular bus services connecting Vyšné Nemecké with nearby cities including Sobrance, Michalovce and Košice.
This coordinated approach is designed to create a continuous, predictable transport chain from Ukraine into the EU.
A response to growing cross-border demand
The new route follows the recent introduction of pedestrian crossing at the Uzhhorod checkpoint earlier this year, which significantly increased foot traffic across the border.
By adding synchronized bus services on both sides, authorities aim to reduce travel uncertainty and improve accessibility for passengers heading into Slovakia and beyond.
Košice, in particular, plays a strategic role as the nearest major transport hub, offering both an international airport and extensive rail connections across Europe.
