Ukraine has officially joined one of the world’s most famous pilgrimage networks, the Camino de Santiago, with the launch of a new route known as Camino Ruteno.
The route will pass through western regions including Lviv Oblast, Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast and Ternopil Oblast, connecting Ukraine to the wider European network that ultimately leads to Santiago de Compostela.
The initiative was formalized through a cooperation memorandum signed during an international forum in Vinnytsia, marking a significant milestone for tourism and cultural integration.
Traditionally rooted in religious pilgrimage, the Camino de Santiago has evolved into a broader journey of personal reflection, mental renewal and cultural discovery. Ukrainian officials see the new route as an opportunity to develop hiking tourism while strengthening ties with European travel networks.
Beyond tourism, the project carries a strong social dimension. In the Lviv Oblast, sections of Camino Ruteno will be integrated into a psychological rehabilitation initiative known as “Therapy Through Travel.” The program aims to support Ukrainian servicemen, women and their families through guided walking experiences focused on emotional recovery and mental well-being.
As part of the integration into the Camino network, Ukrainian sections of the route will receive official signage, including the iconic yellow shell on a blue background, and will be included in European guidebooks. This recognition is expected to attract both domestic and international travelers, who will now be able to begin their Camino journey directly from Ukrainian cities.
The launch of Camino Ruteno highlights a broader trend in travel, where long-distance walking routes are increasingly valued not only for their cultural and historical significance, but also for their role in wellness, resilience and meaningful exploration.
