Ukrainian Railways (Ukrzaliznytsia) has received its first newly built couchette cars since Ukraine gained independence in 1991. The six new carriages, each with a capacity of 58 passengers, were manufactured at the Kryukiv Railway Car Building Plant and will be added to the Lviv – Kharkiv, Kramatorsk train route.
Designed with modern comfort and accessibility in mind, the new couchette cars mark a significant upgrade in budget railway travel. They feature improved privacy, family-friendly amenities, and a fresh, light-toned interior aesthetic.
Key improvements include:
Expanded luggage space: The area under the lower bunk, between the window and a shortened storage box, can now accommodate military backpacks or travel suitcases.
Upper bunk upgrades: Individual foldable tables and a special leg recess allow passengers to sit more comfortably.
Privacy enhancements: Mini-partitions have been introduced to give passengers more personal space compared to older models.
Modern power access: Every berth, including side ones, now has electrical outlets with USB and Type-C ports, along with three-mode personal reading lights.
Climate and sanitation: Cars are equipped with air conditioning and vacuum toilets.
Child-friendly features: Each car includes baby playpens and changing tables.
Comfort additions: All bunks now have soft side backrests, and stairs to the upper level have been redesigned for easier access.
Brighter interiors: New upholstery and adjustable lighting create a more pleasant travel environment.
Accessibility for the visually impaired: High-contrast markings identify handles and railings; Braille signage is placed at recommended heights. Seat numbers are also printed in raised tactile format, designed for passengers who recently lost vision and are unfamiliar with Braille.
The innovations reflect Ukrzaliznytsia’s broader modernization strategy. In 2025, the company plans to overhaul 59 carriages, 37 of which will be couchette cars. These upgrades are part of Ukraine’s ongoing efforts to improve the quality and inclusiveness of public transportation.
