Kyiv and Zhytomyr Connected by Express Train

Ukraine’s new regional express train route between Kyiv and Zhytomyr promises faster, more comfortable travel at a lower price. Starting June 27, Ukrzaliznytsia will launch the daily express train №856/855, linking the two cities in just two hours. The new route offers a modern alternative to minibus travel and is designed to support commuters and travelers with convenience, speed, and accessibility.

The train will run on weekdays, stopping only in Fastiv. With comfortable seating, bathrooms, phone charging outlets, and space for luggage, passengers can enjoy a smooth journey at a fraction of the usual cost. A one-way ticket in a seated car without air conditioning will cost only 110 UAH—more than two times cheaper than a minibus ride.

From Kyiv, train №855 departs at 17:48, stops in Fastiv at 18:30, and arrives in Zhytomyr at 19:58. The return train №856 departs Zhytomyr at 06:18, stops in Fastiv at 07:49, and reaches Kyiv by 08:44. In August, the schedule will be slightly adjusted, with the morning train expected to arrive in Kyiv at 08:37.

This regional express also includes features for passengers with disabilities, such as wheelchair-accessible areas and signs in Braille. Bike racks are also available, making the train ideal for active travelers and daily commuters alike.

Despite the promising timetable and improved features, public reactions are mixed. Many online comments reflect skepticism, with users recalling similar express services that were canceled in the past due to low demand, especially during mid-week travel.

Still, this route offers a fresh opportunity to revive regional rail use and reduce road congestion. With fuel prices rising and a growing need for reliable public transportation, this express service could become an attractive and sustainable option for daily travel between the two cities.
