Icelandic low-cost airline Play has transferred part of its Airbus A321neo fleet to Ukrainian airline SkyUp. These four aircraft are already operating flights out of Chișinău and several Polish and Romanian cities.
Why This Move Matters for SkyUp and Play
For SkyUp, which has been expanding aggressively in the European Union while Ukraine’s airspace remains closed due to the war, this aircraft deal is a game-changer. It strengthens the airline’s foothold in Europe and accelerates its transformation into a global carrier.
For Play, leasing out aircraft is a financial lifeline. The Icelandic carrier plans to exit the North American market entirely starting fall 2025, and will reduce flights to Northern Europe, focusing instead on high-profit routes to Southern Europe, especially for leisure travel.
Play is leasing out 6 of its 10 aircraft to other European airlines — with SkyUp being one of the primary clients.
Some of the transferred jets have already received SkyUp’s signature orange-and-white livery and Maltese registration as part of their European expansion strategy.
SkyUp’s Growing Presence in Europe
SkyUp’s growth isn’t happening in isolation. The airline recently signed a strategic partnership with Moldova’s Vision Air, allowing it to market and sell tickets under its own brand for flights operated to and from Moldova.
In June 2025, SkyUp also launched regular flights from two Romanian airports, signaling broader ambitions beyond Eastern Europe.
